IDEM 2012

Blogged under Dental Education,Personal by DrJean on Sunday 20 May 2012 at 4:34 am

I managed to attend the International Dental Exhibition and Meeting this year in Singapore in April. It was quite a struggle for me though, to be away from my baby for the first time since I gave birth last August .
That aside,it was a good time of learning and catching up with dental colleagues.

I had 2 of my associates Dr Amy and Dr Ling, with me.

Happy 2012

Blogged under Family by DrJean on Sunday 1 January 2012 at 4:34 am

It’s another new year! Wow,I was just trying to catch up with the past few months that seemed to be whizzing past me and before I know it,the year 2011 had come to an end!

The year that passed has been a very eventful year, the highlight being Tjia-Xin,who turns 5 months old in a few days time, the latest addition to our family ūüôā

I am really thankful for good health, that at my not-so-young age,I went through a easy and comfortable pregnancy and labor.
And its really great to have so many helpers around the house.

Well,2012 is definitely going to be exciting!

My annual anniversary get-away

Blogged under Family by DrJean on Wednesday 18 May 2011 at 8:36 am

I just came back from a short but superb holiday together with my husband of 18 years. We try to make it a point to go away somewhere by ourselves during this time of the year to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It is usually just a 3 or 4- day trip but it is always such a wonderful experience and we come home knowing that we are rejuvenated in our relationship. Our children can see that too and it is one of the best ways to assure them and to give them a sense of security.
Some holiday photos in Macau and Hong Kong to share, mostly of us eating!

We had one of the best Portuguese egg tarts I’ve ever tasted,in this quaint little village at the southern tip of Macau, called Coloane.

How I spent Mother’s Day this year…

Blogged under Family by DrJean on Tuesday 17 May 2011 at 12:43 am

I spent the entire day at a dental conference, amidst the outcry from my children!

Nevertheless,I had a wonderful weekend. I had dinner with my family on Saturday night at a nice cosy restaurant in a local mall, where all the children said something appreciative about me. Really touched me.

Then after my conference on Sunday, my dear husband took me for a dinner for “daddy appreciates mummy” dinner…mmm

Great conference in Christchurch and a FANTASTIC New Zealand holiday!

Blogged under Personal,Uncategorized by DrJean on Tuesday 16 November 2010 at 11:44 pm

I just got home from a two weeks trip to New Zealand, having attended the Trans-Tasman Endodontic Conference in Christchurch. The 3-day conference had almost 300 delegates mainly from Australia and New Zealand plus a handful of others who decided to travel many many hours to be there, namely people like me!

We had a great time of learning from some very well known speakers from all Australasia,Europe and USA.

My dear husband,TC,came along( to be my bodyguard,as usual :))

After the conference we went for another 10 days of proper holiday.

One of the highlights of our trip was a planned 3-day alpine hike,or what the New Zealanders call tramping, on the Routeburn Track, one of the many Great Walks in New Zealand. The Routeburn Track traverses 32 kilometres of Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks, part of South West New Zealand  World Heritage Area, and is administered by the Department of Conservation on behalf of the New Zealand public.

We carried everything that we needed for 3 days and 2 nights in our backpacks and we slept in sleeping bags in Department of Conservation huts. We walked on tracks in the forest, climb rocky paths, crossed unbridged streams, walked through snowy paths and in the rain(and got our boots really wet and muddy!) and even walked past a waterfall! Words and even pictures are not really able to fully describe the experience and the fabulous views that we encountered over the 3 days. We can only tell each other that we will be back to do more of these beautiful walks!

Bangkok-one of my favourite cities

Blogged under Personal by DrJean on Sunday 19 July 2009 at 9:55 pm

I just came back from Bangkok last week, after attending a conference organised by the Dental Association of Thailand and sponsored by 3M Espe, entitled New Aspects of Dentistry 2009.

It was a really good conference with a team of excellent speakers lead by Dr Gordon Christensen, who is one of the authorities in current-day dentistry. There was so much to learn from them.Unfortunately, with the current threat of the AH1N1 flu,the number of participants from the region was not very encouraging, which was a great pity.

Posed for some pictures with the 5 esteemed speakers and the president of the dental association of Thailand.

The 3M Espe head of dental division,Khun Jirawan, extended me warm Thai hospitality and I truly appreciated that.

Actually the highlight of my Bangkok trip was THIS….food, glorious food!!!

To my delight, dear hubby agreed to take a few days off his work and accompanied me on the trip,”to be your bodyguard”,he said.

After all the food that we had indulged in,we attempted to burn some of it off by doing the 10km run in the Siemens Run over the weekend, back in Kuala Lumpur.

Here we are with some of¬†our running “kaki”s (groupie).

Chinese New Year 2009

Blogged under Family,Personal by DrJean on Monday 9 February 2009 at 7:49 pm

We just recently celebrated the Lunar Chinese New Year of 2009.

This year,to my great relief,we did not need to travel out of town. The vivid visual memories of traffic jams of the worst kind still flashes through my mind every now and then.So ,to my delight,my parents, siblings and in-laws graciously agreed to come to Kuala Lumpur/Petaling Jaya to celebrate the New Year with us.

It mattered not that I had more than 20 persons staying at my home throughout the period.I was more than happy to house everyone.

Here are some snapshots of all the food and fun ūüôā

Lots of food preparation .

What is Chinese New Year without the giving of ang pows and mandarin oranges!

We even got a chocolate fountain going! Yumm!!

“Climbing the invasiveness ladder”

Blogged under Dental Education,Personal by DrJean on Thursday 23 October 2008 at 12:38 am

I just came back from Salt Lake City,Utah in the United States of America after attending the Asia Pacific Key Educators Conference hosted by Ultradent Products Inc,a leading dental manufacturer in the US.

What a timely reminder for me personally, that we have only that much of tooth structure in our oral cavitites! How invasive do we want to be as dentists,in the name of practising modern,high-tech dentistry? Are we destroying more tooth structure than necessary or are we going all out to preserve as much of it as we can?

This conference covered many topics, including latest updates and trends on whitening, root canal treatment, bonding technology in tooth restorations, aesthetic dentistry and tissue management in dentistry. However,my main take-home point was this -it confirms my conviction about wanting to keep as much natural tooth structure as possible in the mouth.Hence my occasional reluctance and refusal to do certain procedures for my patients is justified.

The man behind Ultradent is the incredibly smart yet amazingly warm and friendly Dr Dan Fischer. He started the company almost 30 years ago in the basement of his house and today it is an establishment with more than 700 employees and sits on a sprawling piece of land in Salt Lake City with a 220,000 square-foot building.

We had the privilege of hearing Dr Fischer share his passion about preserving tooth structure and how we should,as dentists be committed to respecting the tooth structure and educating our patients about it.

Ultradent was such a wonderful host to all of us delegates from Malaysia.India,Philippines,Hong Kong,China and Mongolia. We were made to feel so much at home right from the moment we arrived .The hospitality was genuine and warm, the food was great and plentiful, the programmes were authentic and fun. They even arranged a day of sight seeing for us down to the canyonlands of Southern Utah.

Great trip!!¬†..except for the lonnnggggg journey and the horrendous jet lag that followed…… ūüôĀ

A nice change

Blogged under Personal by DrJean on Tuesday 15 April 2008 at 10:26 pm

On the first weekend of this month,my colleauge Dr Amy and I took a break from our work routine and attended the IDEM(International Dental Exhibition and Meeting) at the Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore.

There were some world-renowned speakers in the dental profession at the scientific convention and we learnt much.

It was a nice change to be able to window-shop at the mall where the convention centre was.Well,we actually did some real shopping too ūüôā ,something we call “retail therapy”;something we do not get to do too often.
